FAQs & Answers (2023-2025)

FAQ and Answers are based on the Principles and Guidelines on Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for 2023-2025.

The new CME/CPD cycle from 2023-2025 has commenced on 1st January 2023. This is a 3-year cycle in which 15 active CPD points are mandatory. The College revised the Principles and Guidelines on CME/CPD for 2023-2025. This change and framework aimed to be in line with the latest version of the Academy’s guidelines by amending the maximum points to be added for accrediting certain CME/CPD activities.

FAQ and answers are based on the Principles and Guidelines on Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) of the Hong Kong College of Otorhinolaryngologists for the 2023-2025 cycle for your reference. Please feel free to contact our College Secretariat at 2871-8733 for further inquiries.

Question 1: What are Active CPD and Passive CME activities?

Passive CME activities refer to passive participation in physical meetings or online academic activities (e.g. attendance of a lecture/seminar/course/conference/meeting). Active CPD activities refer to all other activities as listed in the guidelines that involve active participation (e.g. Morbidity and Mortality meeting, Grand Round, Journal Club meeting, Clinical Pathology meeting, X-ray meeting, College-held CPD seminar, teaching, presenting, chairing a meeting, conducting examination, self-study, publications, audit, research, postgraduate course leading to postgraduate qualification, hands-on clinical attachment program, etc.). Fellows should acquire a minimum of 15 active CPD points per cycle.

Question 2: How can I gain CME/CPD points?

Online/Physical attendance of ENT lecture/seminar/course/conference/meeting (1 passive point per hour) or non-ENT related lecture/seminar/course/conference/meeting (0.5 passive point per hour).

  • Online/Physical attendance of a local or overseas ENT lecture/seminar/course/conference/meeting can be awarded a maximum of 20 passive points per meeting.

  • Studying an ENT or Non-ENT journal paper, book chapter, audiovisual materials or internet publication and submitting a written summary of not less than 100 words will be awarded one active point per article.

  • Correctly answering the test questions after online/physical attendance of ENT lecture/seminar/course/conference/meeting or the CME Quiz after reading medical journals with scores over 75% will be awarded one active point.

  • Online/Physical attendance of College held webinar session/CPD seminar or discussion forum will be awarded one active point per hour.

  • Online/Physical presenting in a College approved webinar session/lecture/seminar/course/ conference/meeting will be awarded five active CPD points per event day.

Question 5: Are any minimum or maximum points required to be reported on a yearly basis?

For our College, there is no requirement for a minimum number or a limit on the maximum number of CME/CPD points to be achieved each year.

Question 6: What happens if I fail to acquire 90 points in a cycle?

You will be considered as non-compliant with the requirement, which may have serious consequence. There are two categories of non-compliance: Remediable and Non-remediable non-compliance. Remediable non-compliance refers to acquiring more than 60 points but less than 90 points. Fellows in this category must submit an explanation and a proposal for a remedial program within two weeks to the Education Committee of the HKCORL for endorsement. These fellows must make up the deficiency within 12 months while undergoing regular and remedial CME/CPD activities. Non-remediable non-compliance refers to acquiring less than 60 points in a cycle without acceptable reasons. In such cases, a recommendation for Fellowship suspension will be made to the HKAM.

HKCORL Music Night – work-life balance via Music sharing and appreciation (4 July, Friday)

Local

The event will be a unique platform for Fellows and Members from the College of Otorhinolaryngologists or from other Academy Colleges to engage in a more informal setting, performing and sharing the music they love.
The music shared will include Acapella singing, Chinese musical instruments, Violin, Acoustic Guitar, Pianos, Jazz music, and Full Bands.

Within the current healthcare framework, otolaryngologists face significant work pressures and challenges. Their responsibilities go beyond handling urgent emergencies; they also involve coordinating medical resources across departments and managing the emotional needs of patients and their families. Such occupational stress can negatively impact a doctor's mental health, potentially leading to burnout and decreased performance.
Music plays a powerful role in mental health and well-being. It has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression by promoting relaxation and emotional expression. Listening to or playing music can trigger the release of dopamine and serotonin, neurotransmitters associated with pleasure and mood regulation. Additionally, music therapy is widely used to support individuals with mental health conditions, helping them process emotions, improve communication, and enhance overall well-being. It can also aid in cognitive function, memory retention, and social bonding, making it a valuable tool for mental health care. The College of Otorhinolaryngologists held its first Music Night in 2015, where participants shared vinyl records utilizing high-fidelity sound equipment. Subsequent College events also include highlight performances from Otolaryngologists featuring both Western and Chinese musical ensembles.

Such initiatives also reflect the medical community's commitment to cultural endeavors but also emphasize the significance of pursuing a healthy lifestyle that seamlessly integrates culture and healthcare.
These events have been very well received within our College as well as by friends from our sister Colleges.

Since the formation of our HKCORL Young Fellows Committee (YFC) in 2022, several intimate Music sharing sessions have been organized to fulfil demands and to promote doctors’ well-being and moral within our College.
However, limited by our budget as being the smallest College in the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, our prior music sharing sessions are of very small scales, engaging only around 20 doctors each.

To organize a Music-sharing Night at the Foyer of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Jockey Club Building, targeting 40 fellows or trainees from the College of Otorhinolaryngologists as well as from other invited Colleges.
This will also serve as a part of the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Hong Kong College of Otorhinolaryngologists.
